Robert Engman was born in Belmont, Massachusetts in 1927. He received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, majoring in painting. He moved on to Yale University where he studied with Josef Albers and received an MFA in painting. Finding that sculpture was his deep interest, he continued study at Yale, receiving an MFA in sculpture and becoming an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Sculpture. Following study in Italy through a Morse Fellowship from Yale, he moved to the University of Pennsylvania as Professor and co-Chair of the Graduate School of Fine Arts. He exhibited and lectured widely during his career and continues to make sculpture at his studio in Haverford, Pennsylvania.
